Kolkata, Sep 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) The West Bengal Police told on Thursday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the rape and murder of a minor girl at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district in July this year had filed the first chargesheet in the matter at a district court.
The chargesheet had been filed at the Baruipur District Court exactly 60 days after the crime took place on July 4.
The victim was missing since July 4 afternoon and her body was recovered from a pond in Suryapur area under Baruipur Police station on July 5 morning and the time of the crime was between July 4 night and July 5 morning.
The incident sparked a statewide uproar.
The state government formed an SIT and ordered an investigation into the matter.
A total of four people were arrested. Among them, one accused named Prabhas Mondal died in a police encounter as he tried to escape after snatching the firearm of an escorting police officer.
The post-mortem report of the victim's body revealed that she was alive even before she was wrapped in a sack and thrown into the pond.
The autopsy report indicated severe injuries at her private part and on her head.
The autopsy report cited excessive bleeding and underwater suffocation as the two reasons for her death.
Insiders from the state police said in the 702-page chargesheet, the accused persons had been charged under Section 137(2) (punishment for kidnapping), Section 140 (3) (punishment for kidnapping or abducting a person with the intent to keep them secretly and wrongfully locked away), Section 65 (1) (punishment for committing rape against a female minor under sixteen years of age, Section 70(2) (punishment for gang rape of a female/woman who is under 18 years of age) Section 103 (1)(punishment for murder), Section 238 (punishment for causing the disappearance of evidence of an offense) and Section 61 (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
In the chargesheet, the accused persons have also been charged under Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault against a child) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
